Laura Makabesku

My eyes opened to lips inches from my face,

Their venomous nature was a well-known secret,

A hushed little tale passed from mother to young since ages old,

The toxin has no antidote, no treatment known,

Once exposed, they put you in a solitary cell,

A square of thick wall missing one side,

In the middle of the night horrific howls fill the air,

The poisons’ corrosion a fate much worse than death,

The people tried to give the victims a way out,

A final jump into the deep dark waters below,

As I leaned in and my lips hovered against it,

I felt the scorching heat radiating from its breath,

A silent promise of what was to come, I supposed,

Closing my eyes, I sealed my fate.
